Great summation of the gigapixel panoramic technique. Cool to hear that someone was using PT GUI back in 2001. Been into it for 1.5 years, but now have over 300 images, mostly 360 spherical virtual tours (which are still cool :) on Photosynth.net. First project was the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon for Google Earth called Grand Canyon GigaView. Just zoom on into the Canyon in GE and look for 360Cities.net logos (round, red 360) by the river. There are 30 over 215 river miles. You'll find many more natural and city scenes, band portraits, and and business interiors at my Photosynth profile (GigaView).
You can also see some of the shots I've done for U2 and GigaPixel FanCam. Without a robot, shooting 500-600 photos in 20 minutes on the world's largest stage in front of 50,000 people to create a massive, 20 GigaPixel image of the crowd that is Facebook-integrated, so everybody (even in the nose bleed section) can zoom in & tag themselves.

The only thing you missed in summing up Photosynth.net is their new iPhone app, which allows its 5 million new users (see ya later gigapan.org, sorry but we asked for a spherical projection) to capture panoramas, stitch them with a mini ICE, and upload and share, all from their mobile devices. Incidentally, it also handles gigapixel images beautifully projected on a sphere for a natural look.

The only thing they are missing now is motion navigation through the image. I imagine that will happen in 3...2...1...
